The loss that marked the end of Penrith's impressive premiership streak was just as painful for Nathan Cleary as their 2020 grand final defeat, yet the Panthers firmly maintain that their dynasty is not finished.
After leading 14-0 at halftime, the Panthers were left to ponder what might have been, as they ultimately succumbed to the Broncos, who had previously suffered a comeback defeat in the 2023 grand final.
Coach Ivan Cleary reflected on the match, stating, "I thought the second half, generally speaking, we were on the back foot quite a bit."
He added, "They (the Broncos) looked like they had more fuel in the tank, to be honest."
The Panthers' legacy has been built on maintaining composure in critical moments, but in this crucial situation, halfback Cleary was unable to attempt a two-point field goal in the final minute. Positioned at the 40-metre line for a potential equalizer, Cleary received a pass from hooker Mitch Kenny, which was directed to Isaah Yeo instead.
As Cleary dropped back in anticipation, the Broncos' defense quickly closed in, leaving Dylan Edwards unable to secure his own attempt at a two-point field goal.
