The Panthers have been accused of protecting Nathan Cleary 'illegally' to grant him more time on the ball for kicks ahead of the NRL grand final.
The Panthers are aiming to win their third straight premiership, and Cleary has been instrumental to their success as the best halfback in the game.
However, NRL reporter Paul Crawley has claimed that the referees are turning a blind eye to the Panthers forwards blocking runners at Cleary during the NRL finals.
During the preliminary final against the Storm, Isaah Yeo was seen blocking runners twice in the first half to give Cleary more time to kick the ball.
In the second instance, Yeo even veered off his line to force the Storm chaser wide.
This tactic has raised concerns about the fairness of the game.
Crawley expressed his opinion on the matter, stating, "Cleary is playing in career-best form, there's conversations going on about is he as good as the greatest? As good as Joey? As good as Sterlo? But I tell you one thing he doesn't need, he doesn't need a leg up from the referees ignoring some of the tactics going on to give him protection."
The accusation of illegal protection for Cleary has sparked a storm of controversy before the NRL grand final.
Many are questioning whether such tactics should be allowed, especially when considering Cleary's already impressive performance.
As the Panthers prepare for their fourth consecutive grand final appearance, they will need to address these allegations and ensure that their tactics are within the rules of the game.
The outcome of the grand final will undoubtedly be influenced by Cleary's performance and the Panthers' ability to play fair and square.
