Sean O'Sullivan, a notable player for the Canterbury Bulldogs, is making a significant move to the English Super League for the 2027 season.
Despite his talent as a halfback, O'Sullivan has found limited opportunities for first-grade play amidst the Bulldogs' offensive struggles this year.
Reports from Love Rugby League indicate that due to the team's salary cap issues and O'Sullivan's position on the fringes of first-grade selection, he will not continue with the Bulldogs.
Instead, O'Sullivan is expected to sign a one-year contract with St Helens.
This move allows him the chance to demonstrate his skills in England's top tier, which could lead to either a more secure position abroad or potential opportunities back in the NRL.
Although O'Sullivan is the Bulldogs' primary halfback, he has spent most of the current season away from first-grade matches.
Under Cameron Ciraldo's leadership, the Bulldogs have struggled this season, falling from a top-four finish last year to missing the finals entirely.
During the limited games O'Sullivan played, his involvement seemed to bring improved clarity and structure to the Bulldogs' attacking strategies, but this was insufficient to maintain his place at the club.
Negotiations with St Helens had paused earlier, but they have reportedly resumed and are nearing completion.
At 28, O'Sullivan has made six NRL appearances this season, bringing his career total to 66, having played for various clubs including the Sydney Roosters and Penrith Panthers.
His impending contract with St Helens may also affect Jackson Hastings, who is currently uncontracted beyond 2026.
