The NSW Blues have been hit by a major setback ahead of the 2026 State of Origin series.
Craig Bellamy, the respected master coach, is expected to relinquish his role as a coaching advisor to head coach Laurie Daley.
Although the move has not been formally confirmed, insiders within NSW Rugby League told Wide World of Sports that Bellamy will not take part.
Bellamy recently extended his contract with the Melbourne Storm until the end of 2028 and wants to concentrate on club duties.
The Storm are dealing with several challenges after consecutive grand final defeats, offseason player exits and two straight pre-season challenge losses.
With general manager Frank Ponissi also committing time to the Blues, Bellamy is reluctant to step away from the Storm for a long spell during the season.
That decision would make it difficult for him to balance both responsibilities.
If Bellamy withdraws, it represents a notable blow to Daley's staff and the Blues setup.
The timing intensifies the disappointment after New South Wales' narrow series defeat last year.
Bellamy's advisory role was unprecedented in State of Origin history and designed to supply strategic direction and composure in crucial moments.
His absence would leave a gap in experience for big-game planning.
NSW will now have to identify alternative sources of tactical expertise ahead of the 2026 campaign.
