Adam O'Brien has revealed that it was his decision to initiate discussions with Newcastle's board regarding his exit from the club, highlighting that ongoing speculation about his coaching future had become a significant distraction. Initially, it was believed that Newcastle's board ended O'Brien's tenure following a disappointing NRL season in 2025.

In a media address on Thursday morning, O'Brien confirmed his departure and expressed doubt about whether he was the right fit for the role any longer. He observed that the team had 'lost confidence' in recent weeks and acknowledged that the uncertainty surrounding his future was impacting their performance on the field.

Thus, O'Brien made the commendable choice to step away from the club he cherishes, even with two years remaining on his contract. "All coaches reflect on their seasons when you get to the back end of the year and you always start by asking yourself if you're the right person for the squad," he told reporters.

"I approached the club and they understood. It's been made easier because both parties are in agreement that it's the right time. It was after the Warriors game where we lost confidence. This team needed confidence."

Reports indicate that O'Brien has accepted a payout considerably lower than what he would have earned in the remaining years of his deal. According to News Corp league reporter Dean Ritchie, on NRL 360 Tuesday night, O'Brien's payout is expected to be between '$300,000 to $500,000.'

The departing coach recognized that prolonging his tenure into 2026 would mean the ongoing speculation surrounding his future could overshadow the team's performances. "The one thing that stood out for me is that I was a big distraction," he noted. "We would have to win 15 games next year to avoid speculation."

"To remove that distraction, that's the right thing to do. If I can't win a competition, the way to help them now is to give the new coach time to work with the players. It's hard (to step away) because I love the town and the club. There are great memories so this isn't a sad time for me at all. I'm proud."
