NRL Suspends Cowboys Player After Controversial Tackle

NRL hands down suspension to Cowboys player as Dragons star cops brutal news over incident

The NRL has suspended Cowboys forward Karl Lawton for two games following a hip-drop tackle that injured Dragons player Jaydn Su'A, potentially ending Su'A's season.

Lawton was charged with grade two dangerous contact for the incident during the Cowboys' 38-32 victory on Friday night, which propelled them into 11th place, maintaining their slim finals hopes.

This marks Lawton's second suspension this season, reminiscent of a previous tackle that injured Roosters player Siua Wong.

League legend Andrew Johns had previously called for stricter enforcement against "third man in" tackles after Lawton's earlier offense.

In the recent incident, Lawton targeted Su'A's legs while the Dragons forward was already trapped by two other Cowboys players.

The impact caused Su'A immediate pain, leading to his exit from the field.

Medical evaluations suggest Su'A has a suspected MCL injury, which could sideline him for four to six weeks.

With only six games left in the season and the Dragons currently six points away from the top-eight, this injury could effectively end his season.

Despite the setbacks, Coach Shane Flanagan insists the team still holds hope for finals qualifications.

Lawton's suspension is a significant challenge for North Queensland as they strive to secure a playoff position.

He will miss upcoming matches against the Sharks and Eels and faces the possibility of a third game absent if he contests the charge unsuccessfully.
