Nathan Cleary has expressed his thoughts on Zac Lomax's upcoming move to rugby union, implying that the standout player may have acted too quickly in his decision to exit the NRL.
Lomax, recognized as one of the game's most dynamic offensive players in recent years, announced his contract decision following a settlement with the Eels on Monday morning.
"[Lomax] jumped the gun early leaving Parra," Cleary remarked.
His remarks highlight a wider concern within the NRL regarding the loss of a prominent talent to competing sports.
"We're losing such a great player from the game," he stated, recognizing the negative impact that Lomax's departure could have on the NRL's overall appeal.
Cleary also indicated that Lomax may have benefited from seeking further details on the R360 venture before making a commitment, suggesting the arrangement might not be as straightforward as it seems.
"We want the best talent staying in the NRL," he emphasized.
Nonetheless, Cleary remains hopeful that, despite the complicated nature of Lomax's contract situation, there is a chance for him to thrive in rugby union.
"Obviously he's got that opportunity with the World Cup next year in rugby union and to take that on."
