The NRL is proposing substantial two-year suspensions for three officials from the Tonga rugby league team following an investigation linked to Eli Katoa's serious head injuries.
Katoa experienced several head knocks during a match against New Zealand on November 2 at Auckland's Eden Park, which ultimately led to him being sidelined for the entire 2026 season.
He is currently on the path to recovery after undergoing brain surgery related to the injuries.
The NRL has issued breach notices to the head and assistant doctors, as well as the head trainer of the Tonga team, concerning Katoa's treatment during the game.
The proposed sanctions suggest that the head and assistant doctors be prohibited from working with any NRL clubs, teams, or players, including those in representative competitions, for at least two years.
The head trainer is also facing a two-year ban, while the NRL has decided to issue a formal warning to the team's medical assistant.
Officials have five business days to respond to these breach notices.
"The NRL is continuing to support Mr Katoa and his family during his important recovery," the NRL stated.
