NRL Judiciary Confirms Suspension for Ryan Couchman Following Hip Drop Tackle

Ryan Couchman, a forward for the St George Illawarra Dragons, has received a four-match suspension from the NRL's judiciary.

This decision follows Couchman's direct referral to the judiciary after he was sin-binned for a hip drop tackle on J'maine Hopgood of the Parramatta Eels during their match at CommBank Stadium on Sunday.

The tackle resulted in a devastating ACL injury for Hopgood, meaning his season has come to an abrupt end.

During the hearing, the NRL's counsel argued for a four-game suspension, aiming to send a clear message about the dangers of hip drop tackles. The panel, consisting of Greg McCallum, Bob Lindner, and chairman Geoff Bellew, agreed with this recommendation.

Although the NRL's legal counsel, Lachlan Gyles, did not suggest Couchman acted with intent, he indicated that Couchman should have let go of the tackle when he lost his grip, rather than risking injury.

Gyles described the incident as a "careless mistake."

In his testimony, Couchman expressed remorse over the incident, asserting that he lost his balance and aimed to avoid landing on Hopgood's leg.

"I knew I lost the contact and I lost my balance. My thought was to not land on his leg. I was falling on the ground and I was trying to land my backside on the ground and not his leg. My job is to make the tackle and I didn't want to miss the tackle. My torso falls on his leg which I understand is a risk of injury. I didn't mean for that to happen. I didn't have a grip of J'maine with my left hand and I tried to grab onto Damien," Couchman stated during the hearing.

"I was making an effort not to land on his legs. I made a clumsy mistake."
