Newcastle Knights gun, Kalyn Ponga, has stirred up controversy by announcing his withdrawal from possible selection for the Australian Kangaroos squad, sparking an NRL investigation into the matter.
The decision has reportedly left coach Mal Meninga red-faced and scratching his head.
Ponga made waves on Tuesday when he declared that he would not be putting his hand up to represent Australia in the upcoming Pacific Championship Test matches, despite being fit and ready to go.
"I want to focus on winning a comp, mate.
Anything less than that is a failure in my book," Ponga stated on the Knights' website, sending shockwaves through the rugby league community.
"My sights have always been set on snagging a premiership with the Knights ever since I signed on in 2018.
That's where my heart lies, and that's where my focus will remain.
I want to retire knowing that I gave it my all and did right by the community that supported me."
"I haven't reached that pinnacle yet, which is why I've made this tough decision to really knuckle down and go after those big goals," he added.
The NRL brass are now looking into the situation, as speculation mounts over whether Ponga could potentially be banned from State of Origin selection as a result of his controversial move.
Will the young star regret his decision, or will this bold move pay off in the long run? Only time will tell in the fast-paced world of Rugby League.
