Rugby League fans were left gobsmacked as they learned that top referee Adam Gee had been snubbed for the first week of the finals.

The decision to overlook Gee, who just a year ago officiated one of the all-time greatest grand finals, has left many scratching their heads.

Instead, Ashley Klein, Gerard Sutton, Todd Smith, and Grant Atkins were chosen ahead of Gee for this weekend's games.

Gee will be on standby for the Penrith vs Roosters match as well as Saturday's clash in Townsville, but he won't be working in the Bunker either.

Fans had high hopes for Gee after his standout performance in last year's decider, where he showcased his ability to let the game flow and create some incredible attacking moments.

However, NRL head of football Graham Annesley explained that the decision was based purely on recent form, with no glaring mistakes costing Gee a game this weekend.

Despite calls for Gee to officiate this year's State of Origin series, his 15 finals matches throughout his career weren't enough to secure him a spot in the first week of the finals.

Rugby League enthusiasts are now left wondering how this decision will impact the games this weekend.
