Frustration is mounting among NRL fans who are demanding regulatory changes following an incident involving Roosters trainer Matt King. The image showing King taking the ball from Mark Nawaqanitawase has been criticized as detrimental to the integrity of the game. This comes after the Parramatta Eels, led by Mitchell Moses, secured a decisive 30-10 victory over the Roosters, leaving the team scrambling to secure a spot in the top eight for the finals.

Eels supporters celebrated what many deemed their team's best performance of the season under coach Jason Ryles. However, the excitement was tinged with frustration when Channel Nine aired the moment where a Roosters trainer intervened by taking the ball from Nawaqanitawase in an effort to accelerate the game's pace.

Nawaqanitawase had a standout game despite the loss, executing an impressive behind-the-back pass that led to a try, leaving the NRL community in awe. Yet, with only ten minutes remaining, he found himself diving on a loose ball near his own line after being tackled back into the in-goal area. This scenario forced the Roosters to make a drop-out as they struggled to stage a comeback, leaving the fans feeling disheartened while Nawaqanitawase appeared drained as he tried to rise.

In a bid to expedite the drop-out, trainer King took the ball from Nawaqanitawase and swiftly ran across the field towards the posts, setting the stage for a quick drop-out with Huga Savala taking the short kick.

Though Yahoo Sport Australia does not claim that King acted improperly regarding his responsibilities, there is growing discontent among fans about trainers handling the ball. According to NRL regulations, blue shirt trainers should vacate the field after the fourth tackle.

The rules stipulate trainers can only be on the field during stoppages or to convey messages to players up to three times per half. Following a series of controversies in 2025, the NRL recently reminded clubs about the specific duties associated with yellow, orange, and blue shirt trainers.
