NRL Considers Adding 9th and 10th Finals Teams

The NRL is continually expanding, and with the Perth Bears set for their debut season in 2027, it may be time to consider another adjustment.

As the AFL prepares to expand its finals to include ninth and tenth-place teams beginning in 2026 through a new 'Wildcard Round,' the discussion is gaining traction across sports: should the NRL adopt a similar approach when the Bears join the competition?

At first glance, this concept is intriguing.

It implies more teams, additional games, and an extended finals excitement that keeps fans engaged well into August.

Yet, as is often the case in rugby league, the interplay of tradition and competitiveness introduces complexity to the situation.

The AFL's initiative to enlarge its finals structure to include ten teams aligns with the league's swift expansion and its aim to maintain fan interest for a longer duration.

From a commercial perspective, this strategy is astute, ensuring that half of the teams remain competitive as the season progresses, providing broadcasters and sponsors with additional high-stakes matchups.
