NRL Considering Michael Chammas for PNG Chiefs GM

The NRL is reportedly planning to name Michael Chammas as the head of football for its newest team, the PNG Chiefs. This club is set to join the NRL in 2028 and will be allowed to start negotiations with off-contract players from November 1 this year, as they gradually build their operational team.

Chammas has been in the spotlight for a potential role within the NRL over the past year. He is recognized as one of the most astute figures in the sport, owing to his contributions to Channel 9 and The Sydney Morning Herald. His reputation gained momentum in 2025, particularly after several confrontations on Channel 9's 100% Footy with Canterbury's director of football, Phil Gould.

According to News Corp, Chammas's appointment as the head of football operations for the team based in Port Moresby appears to be finalized. He will bring an extensive network of contacts from both the media and clubs, although he lacks direct experience in an NRL club environment.

There has been considerable discussion in the rugby league community regarding how the Chiefs will attract players. Even with tax incentives agreed upon by both the PNG and Australian governments, players will still have to relocate to Port Moresby. Previous expansion clubs, such as the Dolphins and the upcoming Perth Bears, have faced challenges in acquiring top-tier talent for their teams.
