NRL Confirms Errors but Defends Rules

Referees erred on disruptor, but the rule will stay

The NRL has acknowledged that two contentious disruptor decisions made over the weekend were incorrect, yet they maintain that the rule will remain in place for valid reasons.

Graham Annesley, the head of football, confirmed on Sunday that no adjustments would be made regarding disruptor rules, clarifying that there is no prohibition against competing for kicks with one hand.

In recent years, Annesley has mostly kept a low profile following the discontinuation of his weekly briefings by the league's administration before the last season.

On Sunday, the veteran official clarified that penalties issued to Robert Toia of the Sydney Roosters and Scott Drinkwater of North Queensland were unjustified.

Drinkwater was penalised for allegedly interfering with Josiah Karapani during a kick contest, which led to Brisbane scoring shortly thereafter.

Toia, on the other hand, saw a try denied after a contest with Sam Stonestreet, allowing Cronulla to advance and score.

"In both of those instances the NRL believes they were legitimate kick contests," Annesley told AAP.

"We felt that both players had an opportunity to contest the ball in both of those incidents."
