NRL Clubs Reject 2026 Rule Change Proposal

The NRL's initiative for significant rule changes in 2026 has encountered a setback, with all 17 clubs reportedly opposing a bold proposal aimed at revamping play restarts following a try.

The proposed change would permit the team that concedes a try to choose whether to kick off or receive the ball, a strategy intended to minimize momentum shifts. However, clubs have responded with strong resistance.

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo is expected to engage in a confrontation with club executives, who are advocating for an extended timeline and additional trials prior to implementing any modifications.

Clubs contend that the proposed rule would fundamentally alter the "fabric of the game," leading to increased confusion and unnecessary interruptions.

"Clubs are opposed to this proposed rule, as they believe this changes the fabric of the game in a way that may not be justified," stated an email from the Clubs Consultation Committee, as reported by the Daily Telegraph.

Concerns surrounding player safety have also come to the forefront, with clubs cautioning that hastily introduced rule changes could heighten fatigue, increase the risk of injury, and enhance the likelihood of concussions.

Additionally, the NRL has suggested lowering the six-again restart zone from 40 metres to 20 metres. This would mean that infringements occurring beyond this zone would result in a set restart instead of a penalty.
