The NRL boss, Peter V'landys, has hit back at what he calls a "ridiculous and ill-informed" claim by the AFL that they are embarrassing the rugby league in Sydney.

This latest bout in the code wars has left many scratching their heads at the differing crowd numbers in the same Moore Park precinct last weekend.

In one corner, we had the Sydney Swans battling it out against Port Adelaide in front of a roaring crowd of 44,053 at the SCG.

The sea of red at the stadium was a sight to behold as the Swans secured their spot in the AFL Grand Final next Saturday.

On the other hand, the Sharks managed to break their finals losing streak with a hard-fought victory over the North Queensland Cowboys in front of just 19,124 fans at Allianz Stadium.

Some are touting this as a victory for the AFL, with the Sydney crowd numbers speaking volumes about the league's popularity in the city.

However, V'landys is not one to back down from a challenge, asserting that the NRL is still very much alive and kicking in Sydney.

In the world of sports, there will always be rivalries and comparisons drawn between different codes.

But one thing is for sure - the passion and fierce competition in both the AFL and NRL will continue to captivate fans across the country.

So let the games continue, and may the best code prevail!
