NRL bigwig Andrew Abdo has come out swinging, defending the controversial decision to invite US President Donald Trump and UFC head honcho Dana White to the Las Vegas season opener, a move that saw domestic violence organization White Ribbon walk away from the league.

"We're taking this game to America.

We're guests on their turf," Abdo explained at a promo event for fans at Resorts World in Sin City.

"Last year it was Joe Biden, this year it's Donald Trump," he continued.

"We always extend an invitation to the current leader of the land we're visiting.

"It's just standard procedure.

It's got nothing to do with politics.

We're a sport.

the goal is to unite people, no matter their political leanings or background."
