NRL Bans Contract Talks Under New Rules

LeagueNews.co | Jason Patrick

The NRL has announced revisions to its anti-tampering rules for the 2026 season, specifically prohibiting public commentary on player contracts.

This decision stems from ongoing concerns about statements made by club directors, agents, and others in the sport regarding player agreements. Such comments have been particularly problematic throughout 2025, notably in relation to Lachlan Galvin's contract with the Wests Tigers, along with several other instances over the years.

In response, the NRL has collaborated with the Rugby League Players Association to develop this new policy. In an official statement, the NRL noted, "The National Rugby League (NRL) has advised Clubs and Accredited Player Agents of changes to the NRL Anti-Tampering Rules which will come into effect on February 1, 2026."

The league emphasized that the updates will introduce guidelines aimed at preventing outside interference in contract negotiations through public comments.
