The NRL has decided against implementing its suggested changes to the kick-off rule after facing backlash from clubs.
As first revealed by this masthead in November, there was a proposal that teams being scored against could choose to receive the ball instead of automatically kicking off. However, during a meeting of the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) on Tuesday, it was concluded not to move forward with this adjustment. Instead, the change will be trialed in matches without implications for the finals towards the end of the 2026 season, pending further review.
