In a scene reminiscent of a rough and tumble footy match, Jack Hetherington and Reed Mahoney have found themselves in hot water after a bizarre tunnel altercation following the game at Accor Stadium.

The NRL match review committee has handed down their verdict, charging both players for their role in the scuffle.

Hetherington, known for his fiery on-field antics, faces a one-game ban if he chooses to plead guilty early.

The Newcastle enforcer's history of run-ins with the law hasn't done him any favors, as he was slapped with a grade 2 contrary conduct charge.

Meanwhile, Mahoney has the option to cop a $1000 fine for his lesser grade 1 charge.

Referee Peter Gough had his hands full trying to calm the players down late in the game, with tempers flaring on both sides.

However, things took a turn for the worse when Hetherington confronted Mahoney in the tunnel, looking ready for a scrap before being pulled away by Bulldogs staff.

Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo downplayed the incident, stating that he didn't believe it was too serious and vouching for Hetherington's character.

However, the drama of the tunnel showdown will surely add to the folklore of Rugby League's colorful history.
