FIVE November 1 targets: North Queensland Cowboys
Identifying a team that has consistently underperformed relative to expectations is challenging, but the North Queensland Cowboys have certainly struggled in this regard in recent seasons. Despite having made playoff appearances under Todd Payten, the team has not been able to establish itself as a regular contender for premierships.
In reality, the Cowboys have not been close to achieving this goal for quite some time. While a complete overhaul isn't necessarily required, it's evident that coach Payten is facing considerable pressure to improve the team's performance if he wishes to secure his position long-term.
Looking ahead, 2027 appears to be a pivotal year for potential changes in Townsville, as the current squad has limited contractual commitments going into the season. Although the team features some significant financial contracts, there is considerable flexibility for the Cowboys to part ways with several players and pursue a new direction.
