Nicho Hynes' fitness has thrown a spanner in the works just moments before NSW unveils its team for Game 1 of State of Origin.

The Sharks sensation left NSW coach Michael Maguire scratching his head after he failed to complete the full 80 minutes in his clash against Penrith on Saturday night.

Reports emerged on Sunday morning that the halfback will undergo scans later in the day, forcing Maguire to take a gamble on his fitness as he reveals his lineup on Sunday night.

The series kicks off on June 5 at Accor Stadium in Sydney.

Initially, it was believed Hynes would have to wait until Monday for the tests, a curveball that could have led to a delay in Maguire's announcement, as AAP journalist Scott Bailey noted.
