An icon of the NSW Cup for the Newtown Jets and former utility for the Cronulla Sharks, Billy Magoulias, has officially announced his retirement from rugby league.
Magoulias has spent the last eight years with the Newtown Jets, choosing to end his playing career after participating in the NSW Cup, NRL, and Super League competitions.
While he is best known for his contributions to the Jets, he also played 17 matches for the Cronulla Sharks from 2019 to 2021 and had a one-year spell at the Warrington Wolves, where he made 12 appearances.
A five-time international player for Greece, Magoulias will be particularly celebrated for his remarkable performances with the Newtown Jets, which include two NSW Cup titles and one State Championship victory.
He notably stood out in 2019, delivering two standout moments for the Jets. In the NSW Cup Grand Final that year, he assisted in the game-winning try by setting up fullback William Kennedy, and just a week later, he executed a decisive chip-kick that helped them beat the Burleigh Bears in the State Championship.
"Yeah, it is pretty crazy when you look back at it to think how did you do that? But, for me, I don't sit there and talk about it personally - that doesn't really [play] on my mind - but every time I talk to a Newtown fan, they always remind you of it," he shared with The Sydney Morning Herald in 2024.
