Newcastle's rise tests hardline coaching

Knights respond in style to down Titans in Newcastle

Justin Holbrook has taken Newcastle from last place to a grand final this season without intimidation, challenging the NRL's traditional preference for tough, hard-edged coaches.

His success contrasts with Michael Maguire's changing fortunes at Brisbane, where the Broncos won the premiership under his stern approach last year.

Twelve months later, the club is reportedly in turmoil, and speculation suggests more players could leave after Payne Haas if Maguire's contract is extended.

Holbrook's results have also put the Gold Coast Titans' decision to sack him under scrutiny. They replaced him with Des Hasler, another uncompromising coach, in what could be considered one of Rugby League's worst decisions.

The contrasting outcomes raise a workplace question: would you prefer a boss who greets you with a smile, or one who arrives carrying a baseball bat?
