Newcastle's late bid to keep Best

NRL Rd 7 – Dolphins v Storm

Newcastle have put forward a four-year offer worth about $4 million to keep Bradman Best, according to News Corp.

The proposal would start at roughly $820,000 a season, with clauses increasing the payments over time. Its length is also reportedly negotiable.

Despite the improved terms, Best is still expected to test the market when he becomes eligible on November 1. He is currently with the Kangaroos, making it likely he will reach that date without signing.

Parramatta are set to make the NSW Origin and Australian representative their top target, and their offer could make him the NRL's highest-paid centre. The Roosters may exceed that figure if they pursue Herbie Farnworth with a major bid.

Best's value has risen after consistent performances and a strong finals campaign that helped Newcastle reach the 2026 grand final. Clubs are also attracted by the limited number of high-level centres available.

Newcastle previously offered around $700,000 annually, prompting Best to consider other options. He tested the market during his last contract negotiations before re-signing with the Knights.

The club's ability to improve its offer is constrained by a tight salary cap, including seven-figure deals for Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown and several recent extensions. Jack Bostock, another elite centre off-contract at the end of 2027, is also expected to attract multiple clubs.
