9News reporter Danny Weidler says referee Ashley Klein will be dropped from the preliminary finals after Newcastle's controversial victory.
The Knights defeated the Warriors 12-10 in a semi-final shaped by three disputed decisions against New Zealand.
The calls could prove costly for Klein, regarded as one of the game's leading officials.
Code Sports reported that projectiles were thrown at Klein and other match officials as they left the field.
The incidents followed ugly scenes after the tense contest.
Warriors great Shaun Johnson criticised the behaviour of supporters while reflecting on the team's night.
"It leaves a bit of a sour taste in your mouth under what's been an unbelievable night," he said on Sky Sports.
"The colours, the energy, the happiness, the celebration. But there's just no need for it. It's just embarrassing."
The NRL said the safety of officials, players, staff and spectators remained its highest priority.
"Anyone found breaching the required standards can expect to be subject to significant sanctions, including being banned from venues," the governing body added.
