Sharks sink to Knights in Newcastle

In a thrilling match, Newcastle Knights secured their spot in the 2023 finals series with a dominant 32-6 victory over the Cronulla Sharks.

However, the win came at a cost as Knights' superstar Kalyn Ponga suffered a shoulder injury.

Ponga showcased his incredible skills throughout the game, scoring a try and playing a part in two more as the Knights extended their winning streak to eight matches.

But the sell-out crowd fell silent when Ponga was taken down by a tackle from Jesse Ramien, resulting in a shoulder injury.

The severity of Ponga's AC joint issue and the extent of the damage to his right shoulder will be determined through scans.

While this is a concerning setback for Ponga, the Knights can breathe a sigh of relief as they have already secured a home final and can afford to be without him for at least next week's match against the Dragons.

Both teams were evenly matched in the first half, with the score locked at 6-6.

However, the Knights dominated the second half, powering ahead with converted tries from Bradman Best and Dominic Young, giving them a comfortable lead.

Another try from Best, where Ponga was heavily hit by Ramien in the lead-up, was quickly followed by a remarkable effort from Greg Marzhew, resulting in the Knights running in 32 unanswered points.

Earlier in the game, the Knights had a try denied to Young, which could have given them an early lead.

Instead, it was the Cronulla Sharks who crossed the try line first on the right edge through Connor Tracey, stunning the sold-out crowd on Old Boys day.

Despite the injury setback, Ponga's outstanding season in attack on the left edge continued, as he managed to get on the outside of Matt Moylan and secure a try for the home side.

Overall, the Knights' victory over the Sharks has solidified their place in the upcoming finals series.

However, the extent of Ponga's injury remains a concern for the team as they prepare for the next phase of the competition.
