As Wests Tigers seek a new CEO following Shane Richardson's dismissal on Monday, two candidates have emerged as potential replacements.
While the club has not officially confirmed Richardson's successor, departing Manly Sea Eagles CEO Tony Mestrov and current Wests Tigers GM of Football Shaun Mielekamp, who is expected to assume the role on an interim basis, have both been mentioned in discussions about the position.
Shaun Mielekamp joined the Tigers in early 2024 and stepped into the GM of Football position in September, having previously served as the GM of Community, Foundation, and Affiliates at the club.
Before his time with the Wests Tigers, Mielekamp spent nine years as CEO of the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League. During his tenure, he led the club to significant achievements, including consecutive Grand Final victories in 2023 and 2024, helping them rise dramatically from the bottom of the standings.
Reports suggest that Mielekamp is the leading candidate for the role of chief executive; however, The Sydney Morning Herald has also identified former St George Illawarra Dragons CEO Ryan Webb and ex-Penrith Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher as additional external contenders.
"It's been a privilege to be part of the Wests Tigers and see what we've been able to achieve as a club," Richardson remarked on Monday.
