Cameron Munster has shared his surprise over being named Queensland's captain following the axing of Daly Cherry-Evans.

The announcement was made by Maroons coach Billy Slater ahead of the critical State of Origin Game 2 against the Blues in Perth on June 18.

While Munster describes the appointment as "bitter-sweet," he is excited about leading his team.

Munster recounted the moment he received Slater's late-night text.

Initially, he feared the worst-thinking he could be dropped or relegated to the 18th man.

"At 9:30 last night Billy just messaged me saying, 'are you around?' I said 'yeah, I'm just sitting in my room' and he's like 'come to my room'," Munster explained to reporters.

Fortunately, he received news that exceeded his expectations: Slater wanted him to captain the Maroons, choosing him over other candidates like Patrick Carrigan, Harry Grant, and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui.

"Billy just brought me into the room, said 'look mate, I want you to be the captain for Queensland and I think you will do a great job,'" Munster stated.

He also mentioned that Slater encouraged him to lead by action, rather than relying on words to motivate the team, suggesting the players are already highly motivated.

Known for his playful personality, Munster has matured into a leadership role at Melbourne and is recognized as one of Queensland's most passionate players.

However, the role of captain for his state is something he never envisioned.

"It's pretty emotional; if you asked me that question five or ten years ago, everyone would have laughed in your face," he reflected.

"I think I have developed into a bit of a leadership role over the last three or four years, grown up a little bit.

I know that's hard to say."
