Queensland captain Cameron Munster has publicly supported his former teammate Cameron Smith as a prime candidate for the head coaching position of the Kangaroos, following Mal Meninga's decision to step down.

Smith is emerging as a strong contender for the role, especially after Brad Fittler opted to withdraw from consideration, citing his commitment to media responsibilities with the upcoming Ashes tour.

According to reports, Smith and Kevin Walters are currently viewed as the leading candidates.

Smith has expressed interest in the coaching position but acknowledges that he must carefully consider the commitment it entails.

Although he has not yet met with Australian Rugby League officials regarding the role, his reputation in the sport continues to earn him favorable endorsements from prominent players.

Cameron Smith boasts an illustrious career, having participated in 42 State of Origin games for Queensland, 56 Tests for Australia, and 430 matches for Melbourne.

Munster believes that Smith's extensive experience and tactical acumen would make him an excellent choice for the Kangaroos coach.

In the State of Origin camp, Munster remarked, "His credentials and resume is probably the best that the game's ever seen.

When he talks, you listen.

If you don't know Cameron Smith, you will eventually when he talks to you.

He's got that aura about him.

He's a bit like Mal.

I know he's a Queenslander, but he'll pick the best possible squad for the Aussies that he thinks is going to get the job done.

There's no better person than Smithy to get the job."

As the international schedule approaches in October, the search for the next Kangaroos coach grows increasingly critical, with Smith and Walters leading the discussion.
