In a swift move following the start of the new season, Benji Marshall has reshaped the coaching lineup at Wests Tigers, leading to the exit of assistant coach John Morris.
The former player, who had a significant stint with the Tigers from 2007 to 2009, returned for the 2024 season after his tenure with the Rabbitohs ended. This change was prompted by a fallout between him and the coaching staff, specifically with Jason Demetriou.
Morris's departure comes as part of a four-year agreement, now cut short, and presents an opportunity for the Tigers to look for new talent in their coaching setup. Shane Flanagan, a veteran coach, has already been mentioned as a potential replacement.
Marshall expressed his gratitude towards Morris, stating, "Bomber's experience and professionalism has been invaluable to me and the team, especially as a new Head Coach." He emphasized his appreciation for Morris's support.
Morris, who previously held a head coaching position with the Sharks from 2019 to 2021, has been open about his ambition to secure another head coaching role. He initially filled the position on an interim basis before being appointed full-time.
Despite leading the Sharks to consecutive finals in 2019 and 2020, he was dismissed just five games into the 2021 season. Notably, his contract with the Tigers included a clause allowing his release should a senior coaching opportunity arise elsewhere.
