Mixed Emotions in Round 3 Football

Round 3 certainly delivered an eventful football experience.

The Brisbane Broncos made a triumphant return, overcoming the formidable Melbourne Storm.

The Panthers reaffirmed their position as title contenders once again.

In other matches, an exciting showdown occurred in Gosford, while Scott Drinkwater showcased his skills in Townsville.

Despite these thrilling moments, I can't shake the feeling that the Sharks' poor performance is casting a shadow over my weekend enjoyment.

With blowouts, officiating mistakes, and coaches unwilling to change strategies that aren't working, my mood has certainly dipped.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this-am I just a rugby league pessimist?

Here are 20 observations from Round 3 of the 2026 NRL season:

1. We must acknowledge the fact that rugby league in 2026 is unique. Some players are thriving, while others find themselves struggling. Roster constructions meant for the 2025 style are now being dismantled. It will take many teams some time to adjust. The faster pace of the game is here to stay; we simply need to embrace it.

2. However, I personally feel that the speed of the game is currently excessive. We are witnessing an uptick in injuries related to fatigue. Although injuries are an inherent aspect of sports, we're observing worn-out forwards falling awkwardly or carelessly extending their arms, impacting other players. I suspect we will see a slowdown by the time Origin arrives.
