Mitchell's Position Change Confirmed by Bennett

Latrell Mitchell set for position switch as Wayne Bennett confirms stunning news about return

Wayne Bennett has reportedly confirmed Latrell Mitchell's return on Sunday against the Gold Coast Titans, but it looks like he'll be playing centre instead of fullback. Initially, Mitchell wasn't expected back from a calf injury until next week, yet he was named on the extended bench Tuesday.

Reports on Friday indicated that Bennett had confirmed Mitchell as a "certain starter" for the upcoming game against the Titans, a match that could significantly impact the race for the wooden spoon. Both teams currently hold 16 points, but the Rabbitohs are last due to a poorer points differential.

With the Titans still having a bye pending, a victory over the Rabbitohs this Sunday would greatly assist in avoiding the wooden spoon. Bennett, who has never finished last in his lengthy coaching career, hopes Mitchell's return may ignite his struggling side.

Mitchell is set to play centre, while Bennett has chosen to keep Jye Gray at fullback. Although Tallis Duncan has been performing well at centre, he will shift back to the back-row to make room for Mitchell.

This shift mirrors an earlier situation this season when Mitchell returned from injury. Gray had a few games at fullback while Mitchell adjusted to playing centre, but it was not long before Latrell moved back to the No.1 role.

In a conversation with reporters on Thursday, Gray expressed uncertainty regarding Bennett's plans. "He trained a bit out there today, so it would be awesome to have him back," Gray remarked. "For sure (it's the most he's trained since the injury). He did a bit with the team today, so hopefully it's all good. We'll just have to see how he pulls up tomorrow."

Similarly, Jacob Host added: "He did about two-thirds of the session today and he looked good, so fingers crossed he'll be a massive in for us. He's a great leader who played for NSW this year, and I thought he was outstanding for them. He'll be captain if he's out there and that's what we need in the team - we need leaders - so it'll be great to have him back."
