In preparation for Sunday's NRL grand final, Broncos coach Michael "Madge" Maguire has drawn inspiration from World War II American General George S. Patton, believing he can outsmart his rival, Storm coach Craig Bellamy.

The film "Patton" features the general, known as "Old Blood and Guts," surveying German tank formations led by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel in North Africa. Patton famously declares, "Rommel, you magnificent bastard. I've read your book."

Much like Patton claimed to anticipate Rommel's strategies, Maguire, who spent five years as Bellamy's assistant in Melbourne, feels equipped to understand his former superior's tactics.

However, it's important to note that this iconic movie moment is fictional, just as much of Maguire's psychological tactics are. In reality, Patton never faced Rommel directly, and Bellamy's strategies are fairly transparent.

When it comes to tactics, the two coaches could easily exchange their game plans with a note saying, "we know that you know we know how you will try to stop us but no, you won't."

Ultimately, with advanced cameras capturing every on-field move, success is determined by execution. The Storm is known for their clinical gameplay, while the Broncos depend on the individual brilliance of their star players. While both coaches may have strategies for set plays, the outcome will hinge on who can better control field position and possession.
