The New Zealand Warriors have achieved a major recruitment milestone by announcing that Luke Metcalf will remain with the club until the end of 2028.
The halfback, who was leading the Dally M count in the middle of the 2025 season before suffering an ACL injury, was originally set to become a free agent after the 2026 season.
This situation would have allowed him to negotiate with other clubs starting November 1, with reports indicating he was leaning toward exploring those options, despite earlier statements about his satisfaction in Auckland.
With the St George Illawarra Dragons and Perth Bears reportedly preparing to make their offers, the Warriors took proactive measures to secure Metcalf by extending his contract by an additional two years.
"We're absolutely thrilled Luke will be with us for another three seasons," Warriors CEO Cameron George stated in a club announcement.
"It's a critical signing which underlines how much Luke means to us and equally how much the club means to him and his family."
The Warriors appeared poised for a strong playoff run before Metcalf's injury, which will likely see him sidelined at the beginning of the 2026 season.
