Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga addressed Kalyn Ponga's decision to sit out the national team in 2024, stating it won't eliminate him from consideration for the Ashes squad this year.

According to reports, Meninga is focused on the upcoming State of Origin, set to begin in Brisbane on Wednesday.

Ponga is back in the fullback position, aiming to prove himself after a lackluster period with the Knights.

The 27-year-old, a former Dally M Medal winner, is looking to earn a Kangaroos call-up by excelling in the series.

Last year, Ponga stirred controversy by turning down a chance to debut for the Kangaroos to concentrate on his club, only to later change his mind amid public criticism.

Meninga opted not to include Ponga in the Pacific Championships squad, which saw Dylan Edwards shine in Australia's victory over Tonga in the final.

Despite the complications from last year, Meninga emphasized that Ponga's performance in the Origin could influence his selection for the national side, even with rumors of Ponga potentially representing New Zealand in the future.
