Mal Meninga is copping heat for his puzzling use of the interchange bench during Australia's win over Tonga, with some fans scratching their heads over the absence of Matt Burton and Hudson Young in the game plan.

The Kangaroos pulled off a gritty 18-0 victory against a determined Tongan side, but certain players, including Dylan Edwards and Mitchel Moses, faced criticism for their lackluster performances.

Despite the win, Meninga's coaching decisions left supporters confused, drawing comparisons to Brad Fittler's final games as NSW coach.

Burton was thrown into the mix with just nine minutes remaining, even though Australia had a comfortable 12-0 lead and struggled to break through Tonga's defense, despite Isaiya Katoa's errors.

Burton did his best to make an impact with limited time on the field, making two runs and seven tackles.

However, the Bulldogs' playmaker wasn't the only one with little influence on the game, as Hudson Young was only given a short stint in the last 12 minutes of play.
