The World Cup reaches mid-November, while many NRL players have returned to 2027 pre-season and international stars remain in action.
That overlap has fuelled calls for a shorter season and more representative windows.
Melbourne Storm and Australian Kangaroos star Harry Grant can negotiate with rival clubs from November 1 if he is unsigned beyond 2027.
Many players remain without 2028 deals in what has been described as the NRL's most prominent and widely documented free-agency period.
"Maybe we could shorten the season," Grant told the Newswire.
"Then you have a World Cup where everyone can play footy, and you have your conversations off the back of that. I'm not sure."
Grant is open to schedule changes he believes could improve the game, provided they have broad support.
"There are obviously conversations, but I'd like to think we can have some mature conversations collectively going forward," Grant said.
