The recent controversy surrounding a penalty given to Harry Grant has sparked significant debate following Melbourne's golden point win against the Panthers. Many NRL fans claim that officials also erred when they failed to penalize Storm forward Trent Loiero for not being square at the marker shortly after the game's pivotal moment.
Cleary believed he had secured a victory for Penrith with a field goal at the last moment, but it was disallowed when referee Ashley Klein penalized Moses Leota for obstructing Grant's ability to pressure the kick. This call was contentious, with many agreeing it was technically a penalty but accusing Grant of 'milking' the contact to earn the decision.
Shortly thereafter, Cleary had another opportunity to clinch the win but his field goal attempt was blocked by Loiero with less than 30 seconds remaining. The Panthers lost possession in the scramble for the ball, allowing Melbourne to reach golden point.
Vigilant NRL fans noted that Loiero may have been improperly positioned at the marker as Penrith's Liam Henry played the ball, moments before he sped down to intercept Cleary's kick. Referee Klein did not penalize Loiero, as the Storm seemingly avoided scrutiny, leading to Grant's game-winning try in overtime.
Many believed the match shouldn't have even gone into extra time, noting that Loiero's supposed infringement occurred right in front of the posts, within the Storm's 20-meter line. A penalty kick could have easily given Cleary a chance to win the game outright, but this incident went unrecognized, affecting Penrith's standing in the top four.
Cleary did not address the Loiero situation post-match but expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the penalty awarded to Grant and the actions of Melbourne's captain. He highlighted the NRL's efforts this year to penalize simulation, questioning why Grant was rewarded for what many considered play-acting.
