Melbourne centre Nick Meaney has shared how a custom headgear, inspired by Reece Walsh, boosted his confidence to return to the field just five weeks after fracturing his cheekbone and eye socket.

According to nrl.com.au, the 27-year-old sustained the injury in a head clash with teammate Nelson Asofa-Solomona during a Round 3 victory over the Panthers.

He underwent surgery to address the significant damage, which required the insertion of plates and screws into his face, leading to a "gruesome post-op scan."

As he made a successful comeback last week, Meaney donned a new piece of headgear equipped with custom-made padding designed to protect his face.
