Paul McGregor, former St George Illawarra Dragons centre and coach, has taken on a new coaching role with the Dapto Canaries, allowing him to return to where his rugby league career began.

McGregor, who coached the Dragons from 2014 to 2020 and served as an assistant coach for the NSW Blues from 2022 to 2023, has been appointed as the Coaching Consultant for the Canaries as they prepare for the Harrigan Cup tournament.

The Harrigan Cup will feature six teams, including the Western Suburbs Red Devils, Thirroul Butchers, Collegians Collie Dogs, Corrimal Cougars, De La Salle Caringbah, and the Dapto Canaries.

McGregor expressed his excitement about the opportunity to give back to the club where he started his journey in rugby league, stating, "I'm giving a little back to a club that gave me lots when I was younger.

That's what I'm enjoying doing."

McGregor's ties to the Dapto Canaries date back to before his first-grade debut with the Illawarra Steelers in 1991, as he spent five seasons playing for the club.

His successful playing career also saw him represent the NSW Blues and the Australian Kangaroos.

With his wealth of experience as both a player and a coach, McGregor will be a valuable asset to the Canaries as they gear up for the competition.

The news of McGregor's new coaching role has sparked interest and excitement among rugby league fans, with many eager to see how he will contribute to the development of the Dapto Canaries.

McGregor's return to his roots and his willingness to give back to the club that played a significant role in his career highlight his commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a strong sense of community within the rugby league world.

As McGregor embarks on this new chapter in his coaching career, he is poised to make a positive impact on the Canaries and inspire the next generation of rugby league players.
