Matterson Set for Eels Comeback in 2026

Ryan Matterson's time with the Parramatta Eels appeared to be at an end just five months ago, yet the veteran forward has now positioned himself for a significant role in 2026 after mending his relationship with the team.

In late July, Matterson was granted an immediate release and moved on to join the Super League's Warrington, seemingly concluding his chapter with the Eels prematurely.

However, after a meaningful conversation with the new Eels coach, Jason Ryles, the 31-year-old has made his return to Parramatta and has already shown promise during the early phase of pre-season activities.

The back-rower only made four appearances off the bench last season under Ryles' leadership, but insiders feel that Matterson is now "a man reborn," having dedicated himself entirely to the program.

"They mended fences and agreed to start afresh," an Eels source told Wide World of Sports.

Ryles has expressed confidence in Matterson's potential to take on a leadership role within the team, with reports indicating that the former Origin player is excelling in training and embracing a renewed position of seniority.

"Ryan is a senior player now and still has a lot of good footy in him," the source said.
