Queensland State of Origin star Tom Dearden has shared how learning from Maroons legend Johnathan Thurston has significantly impacted his career.

Dearden debuted in the 2022 State of Origin decider, contributing to Queensland's victory.

Recently, he took over the No.7 jersey from Daly Cherry-Evans for Game 2 of this year's series, helping Queensland secure a crucial 26-24 win over NSW in Perth.

As Dearden prepares for an upcoming decider in Sydney, he reflects on his experiences and acknowledges that while he's faced intense matches, playing in front of 80,000 Blues fans adds a new layer of challenge.

He has actively sought advice from Thurston, who has served as a halves coach for both the Cowboys and Queensland since retiring.

Dearden emphasized the significance of learning from Thurston and Queensland coach Billy Slater in his development.

"He has had a great influence.

Since I was a kid, I have always watched JT and the way he competes and what he does on a footy field," he stated.

He aims to emulate Thurston's gameplay and has appreciated the guidance provided by him.

"I have been quite lucky where I have had a fair bit to do with JT and when we are in camp or in North Queensland, he always has clips or videos to show me.

It's never anything that you don't know, but it's going back to the simple things."

Dearden believes that consultation with icons like Thurston and Slater reinforces the importance of mastering fundamental skills.

"When you speak to the great players...

it always comes back to the simple things first and that's what I base myself on too."

As the Maroons eye further history in the State of Origin arena, Dearden's journey illustrates the profound influence of mentorship from experienced legends like Thurston.
