Maroons mourn the loss of their Origin pioneer

Queensland rugby league great John McDonald, the first Maroons State of Origin coach, has died aged 79.

John McDonald, a Queensland rugby league icon and the first coach of the Maroons State of Origin team, has passed away at the age of 79.

Known affectionately as "Cracker", McDonald had a remarkable career as a player, coach, and administrator.

One of his most celebrated achievements was leading Queensland to a 20-10 victory over New South Wales in the inaugural State of Origin game in 1980.

This victory has been hailed as crucial to the reputation and future of State of Origin football by Maroons legends Wally Lewis and Chris Close.

Lewis emphasized the challenging nature of McDonald's role in 1980 and praised his ability to guide Queensland to success.

McDonald himself had an impressive playing career, representing Australia in 13 Tests and making 10 appearances for Queensland in interstate matches.

He also played in the 1970 grand final for Manly after showcasing his skills on rugby league fields in his home state.

The rugby league community is now paying tribute to this influential figure in Queensland rugby league history.
