Maroons State of Origin squad set to include three debutants as Queensland counts the cost of injury

The Maroons State of Origin squad is preparing for the series opener on May 28 at Lang Park, featuring three debutants: Sydney Roosters rookie Robert Toia, Gold Coast's Beau Fermor, and Melbourne's Trent Loiero.

Coach Billy Slater is capitalizing on the opportunity to introduce fresh talent after last year's series loss of 2-1.

Injuries have played a significant role in shaping the team; a pectoral injury to Dolphins forward Tom Gilbert and a calf injury to North Queensland winger Murray Taulagi have opened doors for new players.

Additionally, Brisbane's Selwyn Cobbo might miss out after a potential wrist fracture sustained in a recent game against St George Illawarra, where they lost 30-26.

Robert Toia, now 20, has been inspired by Greg Inglis throughout his career.

After overcoming two ACL ruptures, he finally made his NRL debut this year, demonstrating exceptional talent across 10 matches.

His inclusion, along with other new players, marks a strategic shift as Slater seeks to reinvigorate the Maroons after last year's defeat.
