Maroons coach Billy Slater has defended his choice of Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam in the extended 20-man Queensland squad for the upcoming State of Origin clash in Perth.
This decision comes alongside the removal of 36-year-old Maroons captain Daly Cherry-Evans.
Mam's selection has raised eyebrows, particularly since he has only recently returned from a nine-match suspension for a drug-driving incident that led to a rehab stint and a hefty $120,000 fine.
"He's been doing a great job over the last few weeks since he's returned," Slater stated, justifying Mam's inclusion.
Slater believes the squad will benefit from having Mam present and adds, "He's been a part of this squad before and I'm sure he'll take his opportunity if presented." Despite potential criticism surrounding Mam's selection, Slater remains confident about the decision.
Cherry-Evans' position has been filled by North Queensland Cowboys half Tom Dearden as the Maroons aim to win this crucial game to keep the Origin series alive.
