Daly Cherry-Evans' future at Manly Sea Eagles is uncertain as reports suggest the club is unwilling to offer him a two-year extension, while DCE is seeking a longer deal with higher pay.
The 36-year-old halfback has been a consistent and durable player for Manly, only missing 20 games in his 15-year career, most of which were due to Origin commitments.
Despite this, Manly is hesitant to commit to a two-year deal for a player who will turn 37 in the first year of the potential contract extension.
Veteran journalist Phil 'Buzz' Rothfield compared the situation to Adam Reynolds' departure from South Sydney, where the Rabbitohs could only offer a one-year deal, leading Reynolds to sign a three-year contract with the Broncos.
The difference is that Reynolds was 31 at the time, while DCE is older and would be 39 by the end of a two-year extension.
"He wants a two-year deal and he wants decent money," Rothfield said.
"Despite his age, he's only missed 20 games in 15 years.
A lot of those were Origin.
He is very durable."
News Corp league reporter Brent Read acknowledged DCE's durability but also understood Manly's position.
"I think at 37 and as durable as Daly has been, he's 37 that first year of the new contract, so if I'm Manly, I'm probably only offering him one year as well," Read said.
The uncertainty surrounding Cherry-Evans' future has sparked interest from a former coach who sees potential in poaching the veteran halfback.
While DCE has remained non-committal about playing beyond 2025, the negotiation with Manly over a contract extension will be crucial in determining his next move in the NRL.
