NRL legend Mal Meninga has criticized the unfair scrutiny faced by top players like Reece Walsh and Latrell Mitchell, pointing out that critics fail to see the hard work that drives their success.

Despite being hailed for their game-changing abilities, both players are often harshly criticized when they make mistakes or step out of line.

Mitchell, in particular, recently faced online abuse, prompting his mother to come to his defense.

Walsh also faced criticism for a subpar performance, with every move he makes on the field under intense scrutiny.

Meninga highlighted the pressure faced by young stars like Walsh, noting that they are often thrust into the spotlight before they have had a chance to mature and develop.

He emphasized the importance of allowing these players the time and space to grow and learn without the constant pressure and criticism.

"We do put them on a pedestal far too quick," Meninga said on SEN Radio.

"We love to see the next big star come into the game....they haven't had time to grow, to mature and experience life.

And all of a sudden they are in the spotlight and a lot of them just struggle."

Meninga's comments shed light on the challenges faced by young NRL players as they navigate the demands of the game and the expectations of fans and the media.

While Walsh and Mitchell may be criticized for their performances, it is important to recognize the hard work and dedication that underpins their success.

By allowing these young stars the room to develop at their own pace, Meninga believes they can more effectively navigate the pressures of professional rugby league.
