Lucas's Surprising Journey to Origin Selection

Dylan Lucas' impressive ascent from Newcastle second-rower to State of Origin debutant is driven by consistency, confidence, and newfound belief under the guidance of Knights coach Justin Holbrook.

The 25-year-old has emerged as a significant surprise inclusion in Laurie Daley's NSW squad for Game I, earning a spot as the 20th man despite having played just over 50 NRL games.

Although there's no assurance he'll take the field next Wednesday night, Lucas stands among seven debutants welcomed into camp as part of Daley's revamped Blues initiative.

For Lucas, the selection marks the pinnacle of a whirlwind beginning to 2026.

"A little bit nervous, super excited and just pumped to be here. Just super grateful to be here with all these class players."

His journey began with his Knights debut in 2023, and he has steadily evolved into one of the club's most dependable forwards, significantly elevating his game this season.

Even though Newcastle recorded only six victories throughout the entirety of the 2025 season, they have already exceeded that total this year, following Holbrook's appointment after Adam O'Brien's exit.

Lucas has emerged as a key beneficiary of the coaching transition, with veteran prop Jacob Saifiti also earning an unexpected recall to Daley's squad, showcasing the success of Newcastle players under the new coach.

The second-rower has participated in every game except two this season, due to a throat injury, consistently delivering full 80-minute performances on the edge.
